Walmart gift cards are useful because the places that accept them sell almost everything, so a leftover balance is easy to fold into groceries. The thing to know up front is the PIN. This guide covers the standard Walmart gift card and eGift card, not a Walmart-branded Visa or Mastercard, and not a merchandise-return card, which follow different rules.

Check your balance

Scratch the silver coating on the back to reveal the last digits of the 16-digit card number and the PIN. With those, check the balance at Walmart.com’s gift card balance page or by calling 1-888-537-5503. For an eGift card, the PIN is in the confirmation email.

If you save the card to your Walmart account (you can store up to five), the balance and transaction history appear there. Saving it does not lock the physical card; both still work.

Walmart is upfront that the balance it shows is an estimate. Purchases usually update it immediately, but there can be a delay, so don’t plan a to-the-cent checkout on a number you looked up five minutes after a big shop.

Redeem your card

In store: swipe or hand over the card at any Walmart or Sam’s Club register in the US or Puerto Rico. You can pay the rest of the basket by any other method.

Online and in the app: enter the full card number and PIN at checkout on Walmart.com or SamsClub.com, or save the card to your account first so it’s ready to apply.

No PIN? Some older cards were issued without one. They still work in store, but to use one online or check its balance you’ll need to swap it for a PIN card at a Walmart store.

Use a small remaining balance

In store, split payment is routine: the card covers what it can and you pay the difference. Online, apply the gift card first and the remainder goes to your other payment method.

Walmart’s terms also note that the law requires cash redemption when a card’s balance falls below a threshold in certain states. If you live in one of those states (California is the best-known example), you can ask at customer service to have a small leftover paid out instead of spending it.

You cannot, however, combine several cards into a new single card; Walmart does not consolidate balances.

Understand restrictions

  • Where: Walmart and Sam’s Club stores in the US and Puerto Rico, Walmart.com, SamsClub.com, and Walmart Business.
  • Not for: other gift cards, precious metals, or financial products and services. Eligible items can change.
  • Expiry: none.
  • Returns: gift cards are not returnable or refundable except where the law requires.
  • Resale: prohibited, so a card bought from a reseller is at risk of being voided.

Troubleshoot

  • Card declined online: check the PIN was entered correctly and that you are on the US site; then confirm the balance by phone.
  • Balance looks wrong: remember the estimate caveat. Give a recent purchase a little time, then call 1-888-537-5503 if it still doesn’t match.
  • Damaged card: take it with any receipt to a Walmart store, where it can usually be exchanged, or call the number above.
  • Merchandise-return card: if your “gift card” came from a return without a receipt, it is store credit rather than a gift card and may carry different restrictions printed on it.

Protect your card

Leave the scratch-off intact until you need the PIN, and never give the number and PIN to anyone who phones, texts, or emails you. Walmart gift cards are a favourite of scammers precisely because they are so widely accepted; no legitimate bill, fine, or prize is paid with one.

When you check a card you’ve just been given, do it at an official Walmart balance page or phone number, never a site that found you through an ad. And when you file it in your cabinet, record the balance and the date, not the PIN.

Common questions

Does a Walmart gift card expire?

No. Walmart's terms state that gift cards do not expire.

Can I use a Walmart gift card at Sam's Club?

Yes. Unless other restrictions apply, the card is accepted at Walmart and Sam's Club locations in the US and Puerto Rico and online at Walmart.com and SamsClub.com.

My card has no PIN. Can I still use it online?

Not online. Walmart says you can exchange it for a card with a PIN at any Walmart store, or call 1-888-537-5503 for help.
