Starbucks Cards are the gift card people actually use, which is also why so many end up with 85 cents on them in a drawer. The fix is to register the card the day you get it. This guide covers the standard Starbucks Card and eGift. Stars and Rewards perks are a separate thing and are not money on the card.

Check your balance

Registered card: open the Starbucks app and go to the Scan tab to see every card on your account, or sign in at starbucks.com/gift and choose Manage. The balance refreshes about every four hours, so a purchase you just made may take a little while to show.

Unregistered card: you need the 16-digit card number and the security code from the back. Enter both on the Starbucks gift page to see the balance. A barista can also check it at the register.

Redeem your card

In store: hand the card over, or scan it from the app. Most Starbucks stores in North America take the card, but some licensed locations inside airports, grocery stores and bookshops don’t. If a store lists “Digital Rewards” among its amenities in the store locator, it accepts the card.

In the app: add the card using its number and security code. The app’s Scan screen then becomes your payment method, and you can set one card as the default.

Online: Starbucks Card value is for drinks, food and merchandise in participating stores; it is not a general online wallet.

eGift: the recipient can add it to their account, transfer the value onto an existing Starbucks Card, or simply print it and present it in store.

Use a small remaining balance

The simplest route is to combine. In the app you can transfer the balance from one card to another, so a few stray cards become one usable total. In store, a barista can split a payment between the card and another method; say so before they ring it up.

You can also reload the card by at least $5 so a small balance becomes enough for a drink. There’s no fee for that, though it does mean putting more money into Starbucks, so do it only if you’d be buying anyway.

Understand restrictions

  • Where: participating Starbucks stores in the US and Canada; US cards also work in the UK, Ireland, Mexico and Australia, with the total converted to your card’s home currency at no extra charge.
  • Limits: a card can hold up to $500, and daily load limits apply.
  • Not for: cash refunds (except where law requires), reselling, or business promotions without Starbucks’ agreement.
  • Expiry and fees: none.
  • Age: cards are intended for people 13 and over.

Troubleshoot

  • Card won’t scan: try entering the number manually in the app, and check the store actually accepts Starbucks Cards.
  • Reload failed: Starbucks says most failures are a billing name or address that doesn’t exactly match your bank’s records; fix that in your account.
  • Balance missing after a purchase: wait for the four-hourly refresh before worrying.
  • eGift problems: eGift support runs through starbucks.cashstar.com or 1-800-782-7282; general card help is 1-800-STARBUC (1-800-782-7282).

Protect your card

Register it. That’s the whole lesson. An unregistered Starbucks Card is cash: whoever holds it can spend it and Starbucks cannot replace it. A registered card’s balance is frozen the moment you report it lost or stolen and moved onto a new card.

Beyond that, keep the security code to yourself. It exists so only the person holding the physical card can use it, which stops working the moment you read it out to someone. When you file the card in your cabinet, note the balance and that it is registered; leave the security code out.

Common questions

Does a Starbucks gift card expire?

No. Starbucks states the card has no expiration date, the value never expires, and there are no activation, service, dormancy or inactivity fees.

Can I check the balance without the security code?

Only if the card is registered to your Starbucks Rewards account. Unregistered cards need the security code from the back to check a balance.

What happens if I lose a registered Starbucks Card?

Report it online or at 1-800-STARBUC as soon as you can. Starbucks freezes the remaining balance from the moment you notify them and loads it onto a replacement card. Unregistered cards cannot be replaced.
